Arna's children

Arna’s children (Palestine 2003) is a documentary by Juliano Mer Khamis. Yussef had a suicide attack in 2001. Israeli army killed Ashraf in 2002. Alla, the leader of a resistance group, was dead in 2003. The filmmaker realized a documentary of them when they were children, young actors, in the theatre group founded by his mother Arna. In April 2002 he came back to the refugee camp of Jenin, in order to know what’s happened to these boys he knew and loved. Juliano Mer Khamis, Arna’s (she is israeli-hebrew) and Saliba Khamis (Palestinian) son, currently is one of the most popular actors in Palestine. During the first Intifada his mom, Arna, realized an alternative educational project in the refugee camp of Jenin. While Israeli occupation destroyed the official educative program Arna would like t give back to Palestinian people what they’ve loose. Part of the theatre laboratory is the “stone theatre” the program by Juliano. Eight years after Arna’s death, five years after the end of the program, Juliano came back to Jenin camp and found the tragic story of “Arna’s children”. This documentary breaks, with tender brutality, every false contradiction. After he saw growing up, dreaming, and in some case, dying, “Arna’s childen” (just like documentary title) the spectators of this work, longer to give something to expectations, including a sort of reassuring pacifism, are forced to look in it, with wide eyes, an evidence that media would like to make dull.

Behind the dark side story of terrorism there are flesh and blood people, faces, names, family stories, hopes and fears. If there will be a recomposition or a reconciliation, it must happen looking human and humanizing on the others.

Alla, a capo di un gruppo di resistenti, trova la morte nel 2003. Il regista, che li ha filmati quando erano promettenti attori bambini nel gruppo teatrale fondato insieme alla madre Arna, nell'aprile del 2002 torna al campo profughi di Jenin, per capire che cosa ne è stato dei ragazzi che ha conosciuto e amato. Juliano Mer Khamis, figlio dell'ebrea israeliana Arna Mer e del palestinese Saliba Khamis, è oggi uno degli attori più famosi di Palestina-Israele. Durante la prima Intifada sua madre Arna dà vita a un programma educativo alternativo all'interno del campo profughi di Jenin.L'occupazione israeliana ha infatti distrutto il programma ufficiale e Arna intende risarcire i palestinesi del danno subito. Tra le varie attività del centro vi è lo "Stone Theatre", un laboratorio teatrale diretto da Juliano. A otto anni dalla morte della madre, cinque anni dopo la conclusione del progetto teatrale, Juliano torna nel campo di Jenin e scopre la tragica storia dei "ragazzi di Arna".Arna's Children è un documentario che spezza con tenera brutalità ogni falsa contrapposizione. Dopo aver visto crescere, sognare, e in alcuni casi morire, i "ragazzi di Arna" cui fa riferimento il titolo, spettatrici e spettatori di quest'opera che poco concede alle idee ricevute, incluse quelle veicolate da certo rassicurante pacifismo, si trovano costretti a guardare a occhi ben aperti un'evidenza che i media si accaniscono a rendere opaca: dietro la favola cupa del terrorismo suicida ci sono persone in carne e ossa, volti, nomi, storie familiari, speranze, paure. Se ricomposizione o riconciliazione ci sarà, dovrà passare da questo sguardo umano e umanizzante sull'Altro.
